Methodology in Catechesis and Faith Development
Course Description
“Human experience is integral to catechesis, in its identity and process and also in contents and method.” (Directory for Catechesis, 197) Every phase of life is open to the Spirit in different ways, in accordance with the development of the human person. This session will introduce participants to the major theories of human development, faith development, and the method of Shared Christian Praxis, exploring how they can be used to ensure that our ministry responds to the developmental needs and experiences of those we serve.
Course Objectives:
In this course, participants will:
- Become familiar with theories of human development and their implications for catechesis and ministry, including
- Psycho-social development
- Cognitive development
- Moral development
- Faith development
- Understand that the Church doesn't have a particular catechetical method and to be aware of the different methodologies
- Be able to explain how Jesus is the ideal catechist and how the Emmaus story illustrates Jesus’ methodology of ministry
- Understand how and why “human experience is integral to catechesis”
- Be able to explain the approach of Shared Christian Praxis and its movements
- Understand that all ministry depends on the Holy Spirit’s actions in people's lives, bringing them to a deeper faith

Douglas Leal serves as Vice President of Mission Integration with Providence St. Joseph Health in California. Previously, he was Director of the Division of Adult Faith Formation with the Office of Religious Education of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He is the author of the skill-building book for lectors, Stop Reading and Start Proclaiming! Douglas received his M.A. in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College and his B.A. from Loyola University New Orleans. Douglas has over 25 years’ experience in learning and development, organizational design and effectiveness, and strategic planning and implementation.
