Cultural Diversity in the Church - Intercultural Competencies
Online - Asynchronous - with due dates for the weeks of May 25, June 1, 8, 15, 22, 2026
Course Description
In this course, participants will be exposed to one of the priorities of the New Evangelization that the USCCB developed in the Cultural Diversity resource, which is the "recognition of cultural diversity" that points to the profound demographic transformation that has been taking place in the United States and in the Church over several decades. This is not just a practical matter but something integral to the Church's very identity and mission. The focus on cultural diversity is grounded in the urgent need to grow in knowledge and develop appropriate attitudes and skills for the purpose of carrying out the Church's mission to evangelize.
Objectives
- To better understand the meaning and purpose of both evangelization and New Evangelization
- To examine the U.S. prevailing culture in light of the New Evangelization
- To explore key ethnic and cultural groups in the Church, as well as the opportunities and challenges these present for the New Evangelization.
- To understand the meaning of inculturation, or the evangelization of cultures.
