The Identity of Catechesis and the Catechist 

Course Description: 

This course will explain that The Nature of Catechesis is a dynamic and complex reality at the service of the Word of God. It will provide formation so participants are comfortable with catechesis and their knowledge of faith. And intends to provide a practical approach to all ministers of catechesis. 

It will provide a comfortable catechetical, theological, relational, and prayerful formation to those enrolled in the Advance Ministry Studies program. 

General Course  Objectives

Students/participants will: 

  • be equipped with basic principles and skills for the ministry of catechesis.
  • learn about the Nature of Catechesis as a dynamic and complex reality at the service of the  Word of God and His people.
  • be able to describe the relationship between Kerygma and catechesis.
  • get familiar with the goals, tasks, and sources of Catechesis.
  • relate identity and vocation of the catechist and catechesis as an ongoing formation in the Christian life.

Professor: Fr. David Loftus

Fr. David Loftus, a priest of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, is a graduate of both All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland, and Boston College. Fr. Loftus currently serves as Pastor of Our Lady of Refuge, Long Beach, CA. He formerly served in the Office of Religious Education in Los Angeles. He served as Vice President of the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership. Fr. Loftus is the author of several articles for Catechetical Leader magazine and has speaking engagements nationally and internationally.
