Place names can become laden with religious and political emotion and meaning. The “Holy Land” came under one power after another over 3000 years. Christians, different Muslim Empires and finally European colonialist powers occupied the land. Conquerors generally paid little attention to “Biblical names.” The colonial powers, however, brought increased interest/politicization to some biblical names. How has this impacted the modern world?

Fr. Elias Mallon, SA, holds an STL in Old Testament and a PhD in Middle Eastern languages from Catholic University and studied at Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen. He has taught at several universities, including the Institute Ecuménique of the World Council of Churches. Fr. Mallon has been involved in the Christian-Muslim dialogue for forty years and has published widely on Islam. He represents CNEWA on several UN Working Groups.
