New Testament scholars agree that the central commitment of Jesus’ public ministry was compassion. Be people sick, or hungry, or excluded, or poor – whatever their suffering – Jesus had compassion for them. This, then, requires that we catechize and evangelize people in living compassionate faith after “the way” of Jesus.
