Drawing on old "Christian Social Songs" from late 19th and early 20th Century, John Flaherty has assembled the "St Joseph the Worker Choir" to accompany a presentation by Professor Daniel Smith-Christopher about Biblical reflections on 'the worker', and justice - then and now. Come for the challenges of scripture...and song!
John Flaherty is currently the Special Assistant to the Vice President of Mission and Ministry at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). He is the founding director and primary professor of the Pastoral Music and Pastoral Liturgy Certifications programs in the LMU Center for Religion and Spirituality. He has served as the Chairperson of the Liturgy Committee and Music Director for the RE Congress since 1991. John has extensive and foundational experience in establishing and defining the practical, pastoral and experiential parameters of intercultural worship and collaboration.
Dr. Daniel Smith-Christopher is a Professor of Biblical Studies and has taught Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Loyola Marymount University since 1989. A frequent speaker and teacher in Catholic contexts, Daniel was recently an invited lecturer at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, where he taught on "The Book of Daniel". He likes unusual approaches to teaching Scripture, and one of his past workshops at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress was, "The Bible and the Blues" which was well attended and received by participants.
