One area of Ecumenical and Interreligious dialogue is simply what Pope Francis terms the “dialogue of encounter”, where men and women of different faiths encounter each other, get to know each other, and learn about each other, eliminating the stereotypical images we have of one another. What does “compassion” mean in Judaism, Protestant Christianity, and Islam? How is it lived out and how might we engage in it together?

Rabbi Michael Lotker is a Phi Beta Kappa/Magna Cum Laude physicist who spent the bulk of his first career in the alternative energy business, working in wind power, solar and geothermal energy. In 2003, he was ordained as a rabbi and received his Master of Hebrew Letters degree. He is presently Scholar in Residence at Temple Adat Elohim in Thousand Oaks, California. In addition to his studies, Mike has published a book for the Paulist Press entitled, "A Christian's Guide to Judaism".

Rev. Dr. Alexia Salvatierra is the Academic Dean of the Centro Latino and the Associate Professor of Mission and Global Transformation at Fuller Theological Seminary. She is a co-author of many publications including God's Resistance: Mobilizing Faith to Defend Immigrants. Rev. Alexia has nearly 40 years of experience in congregational and community ministry, including as pastor, director of non-profit ministries, community organizing and public policy advocacy.  She has led national initiatives engaging church leaders in immigrant juctice.

Rev. Alexei Smith, a Greek Catholic priest, has served as Ecumenical and Interreligious Officer of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles since November 2000. As such he directs the Catholic Church’s relations with all other Faiths in Los Angeles. He currently serves on the Rt boards of the Academy for Judaic, Christian & Islamic Studies, the Interreligious Council of Southern California and the South Coast Interfaith Council.

Jihad Turk is the founding President of Bayan Islamic Graduate School, a preeminent Muslim institution of higher education offering accredited Master’s degrees in Islamic Studies, Leadership, Education, and Chaplaincy. Bayan also offers a doctoral degree in ministry with a focus on Islamic Leadership.
