The Old Testament has frequently been characterized as a testament of law and violence, and the image of God found there as that of a judge meting out punishment. Such themes are certainly found there. However, divine tenderness and mercy out way such characterization. A close look at the messages of several prophets will provide a very different perspective.
Carol J. Dempsey, OP, Ph.D., is Professor of Theology (Biblical Studies) at the University of Portland, OR, USA. Her research focuses on Prophets, biblical hermeneutics, especially feminist hermeneutics, literary and cultural methodologies, gender studies, and ecology. Author and editor of 18 books, her latest works appear in the Jerome Biblical Commentary for the 21 st Century (2022). She is working on two contracted book manuscripts and two contracted edited volumes. Carol is the current Vice President and President Elect of the Catholic Biblical Association of America.
