5-09: The Way of Beauty - A Privileged Path for Kerygmatic Catechesis

Saturday, February 25 | Period 5 | 1:00pm - 2:15pm

Pope Francis notes that beauty is a path to encounter God and a vital path for evangelization and catechesis. The new Directory for Catechesis takes up the theme of beauty as one of the seven sources of catechesis and notes that the language of art reflects the language of the Incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. In this presentation  Dr. Jem Sullivan will lead us on a pilgrimage of beauty to reflect on reasons why beauty in the form of the arts is an indispensable tool of kerygmatic catechesis in pastoral ministry today. She will present a practical and accessible method for integrating the arts into various forms of catechetical ministries at the service of the new evangelization.

Dr. Jem Sullivan is Associate Professor of Catechetics,  School of Theology and Religious Studies at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. A member of the International Council for Catechesis, her academic research is in liturgical catechesis with a focus on the arts in evangelization and catechesis. Dr. Sullivan authored four books on catechetical themes including, "The Beauty of Faith: Christian Art and the New Evangelization".  She is a frequent writer and speaker on catechetical themes, writes art essays in Magnificat and serves as guest commentator for USCCB's Scripture video reflections.
