3-09: Women's Leadership in the Catholic Church: Oxymoron? Token? Reality?

Friday, February 24 | Period 3 | 2:45pm - 4:00pm

Leadership in the Catholic Church is often identified with sacramental ministry, so it is widely perceived that women have no influence in the Church. Carolyn Woo examines this perception and offers the myths and reality on women's leadership in Catholic Ministries. She names critical capacities needed and the challenges women often face in their leadership journeys. Drawing on her faith, scholarship, and leadership experiences across diverse sectors, she holds a mirror to the current situation and presents a balanced overview with humor and insights.

Dr. Carolyn Woo coordinated and facilitated the Vatican Dialogues for Energy Transition in 2018, 2019 and 2021. She is a board member of National Catholic Education Association, Our Sunday Visitor, Our Sunday Visitor Institute, Holy Cross Family Ministries and Give Us This Day. Carolyn served as CEO and President of Catholic Relief Services from 2012 to 2016.   Carolyn received her Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degrees from Purdue University. She is the author of two books, "Working for a Better World", and "Rising: Learning from Women's Leadership in Catholic Ministries". Carolyn is married has two sons.
